 THE IMPORTANCE OF SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

How would you define sustainable design and what does it aim to accomplish?

The planning and design of buildings and public environments is of crucial importance for contributing to sustainable development, both environmentally, socially and economically.

Beyond the environmental impact, what are the benefits to the homeowner?

Climate change threatened biodiversity and increased social inequalities are challenges we are already feeling and in the long run it will affect the next generation, our children’s future.

How does sustainability factor into your design ethos and philosophy?

Sustainability is Hendefelt & Co.’s driving force for creativity, innovation, increased participation and strong architecture. Within the limits of the planet, we create buildings and an equal society that lasts both today and tomorrow.

Are there any recent case studies you can share with us?

In England, there is a climate innovation district in Leeds, which White designed. It is a good example of how a central industrial area has been transformed into a sustainable, green, district with low-energy buildings. In Stockholm, I have worked as a sub-consultant for White.

Can you talk us through your process from point of first contact to project completion?

With a holistic approach to sustainability, we help our customers to successful projects in everything from architecture to interior design. Whether it is about the environment, climate or social wellbeing, we drive the issues through the entire process, from idea to finished building.

What are some of the main highlights from these projects?

You can get close to a passive house standard, but there are other values that are essential to achieve, such as the design and comfort of the architecture. For me, beautiful architecture and functional floor plans are something to strive for.

What were the biggest challenges you had to overcome?

Acoustics are an essential part of

architecture. We would like to have large, open rooms up to the roof ridge with large windows and open floor plans, kitchen-living room in one. There can be too many angles and hard materials, and you get an increased noise level. Silence is often a forgotten part of the design of private homes, but it can be remedied with furniture and sound absorbers.

What factors led to your choice of building materials for these projects?

We strive to propose house systems with a sustainable timber frame in most projects.

Are there any exciting other plans or projects in the pipeline?

We hope to be able to help with more similar projects during the year.
